The Manhattan Cocktail Family
The Manhattan Cocktail is itself a part of the Martini Cocktail family. Someone in the 19th century (probably in New York ;) ) substituted whiskey for the Martini’s gin and gave the new drink a new exciting name. The Manhattan’s popularity has soared in the ensuing 120+ years and it has, naturally, spawned a slew of riffs and variations.
A few notable members of the Manhattan cocktail family include The Rob Roy, The Black Manhattan, The Brandy Manhattan, The Darkened Manhattan, The Tijuana Manhattan and (distant cousin) Vieux Carré.
